Sweetness of the season! July 31 2018 News

Sweetland Farm - Cherry Tomatoes and PeppersThis time of year the farm really starts to live up to its name. The last few weeks of heat and rain have been the perfect combination to bring some real sweetness to the harvest this week. In the baked pasta with zucchini and summer squash that we had for dinner last night we actually added a little lemon juice to contrast the sweetness of the squash. The tomatoes have stared to ripen in earnest, and will spill their sweet juice all over you if you’re not careful! And while munching on an ear of corn during harvest this morning I realized exactly how its candy-equivalent was conceived of. It takes energy for a plant to make all these sugars, which is why it’s only at this point in the season, after we’ve had a couple months of good, hot growing weather, that we New Englanders get to enjoy the sweetness of the garden. Those months of leafy greens and anticipation make it that much more enjoyable when the summer crops start coming in. Enjoy it while it lasts, and don’t forget to can or freeze the extras so you can add a little sweetness to your suppers this winter!
Now, on to this week’s sweet harvest!
Cheers
