Rain, rain, you can stay! July 24 2018 News

When it rains it pours, or at least rains steadily for 6 days straight, and our fields are loving the extended watering! After weeks of drought we are happily watching the irrigation ponds refill and the veggies perk up. This is one of those weeks when we farmers find ourselves at odds with the mood of most of the people we encounter. Rain can be dreary or depressing or activity ruining to many, but our spirits are buoyed this week after many evenings spent moving, fixing and running irrigation. We’ll take all we can get, knowing there is sun in the forecast for next week!
Of course, the down side to all this water is that the weeds are just as happy to perk up as the vegetables. We are spending much of this week “spot weeding” anything that is in danger of going to seed and making a list of everything that we will need to tractor cultivate or scuffle hoe as soon as the fields dry out. It’s always a balance, and every activity and weather pattern has its counter-part.
But now, on to the harvest!
Cheers
