Let the Fall Harvest Begin! September 3 2019 Newsletter.

Fall seems to have officially blown into the Upper Valley with this last rainstorm. The change in season feels apparent now, given the cooler temperatures and numerous trees that have begun their annual transformation into spectacles of bursting color.

Make sure you pick out the best potatoes, girls!

Farming has many pleasures. And, one of those pleasures is the ability of folks working the land to see, and feel, the changing of the seasons in a subtle manner. The shifting tones of light. The evolving smells of rebirth and senescence. The sounds of migrating species. The changing availability of produce. It all combines to reflect the dynamic and beautiful world that we live in.

Accordingly, through amber light, squawking geese, and the fragrant creation of loam soil via decay, our 16thweek of CSA shares seems to have nudged further and closer into resembling fall bounty. Here is to officially kicking off the fall harvest!

Brimming Basket:

  • Apples, 2 pounds
  • Plums, ½ pint
  • Leeks, 3
  • Carrots, 2 pounds
  • Peppers, 3
  • Tomatoes, 3 pounds
  • Sungold cherry tomatoes, 1 pint
  • Onions, 2
  • Eggplant, 2
  • Corn, 4 ears

Half-Pint:

  • Apples, 1 pound
  • Leeks, 2
  • Carrots, 1 pound
  • Beets, 1 bunch
  • Peppers, 2
  • Tomatoes, 1.5 pounds
  • Sungold cherry tomatoes, ½ pint
  • Onions, 1
  • Corn, 2 ears

Recipes for the Week:

  • Our carrots are good and sweet this week. So, why not make a sweet carrot bread?
  • Not sure what to do with those leeks? Braise them as a side dish!
  • You could eat your apples right away, or turn them into a fall-esque cabbage salad.
