Planting time! May 28 2019 Newsletter

Greetings from Sweetland

Just in from the field where I was seeding parsnips, carrots, beans and herbs in the golden sunshine and lengthening shadows. The name of the game this week is planting! With no sign of frost in the 10-day forecast, we are in the clear (though I’m still knocking on wood!) to start the mad rush of summer planting. In the main fields we’ll be putting in red and green lettuce, celeriac, sweet potatoes, pac choi, and the first round of sweet corn. In the pick-your-own garden we are filling in the last of the flower beds and adding hot peppers, basil, fava beans and English peas to the mix. *We know how excited many of you are about visiting the pick-your-own garden! We’ll open it for picking in about a month, but in the mean time feel free to wander the garden, sticking to the paths, to check on how the plants are growing!* And if you want to get in on a little of the planting madness yourself we’ll have tomato plants for sale at the farm stand this week! Look for heirloom Orange Valencia, workhorse New Girl, everyone’s favorite Sungold Cherry, and a smattering of others. Tomatoes are vines, so plant them in a place where they can either be trellised or are free to crawl. And keep them warm by covering them on cool nights with a sheet or row cover. And now, here’s what’s on tap for this week’s harvest.

Cheers, Norah and the Sweetland Crew
