Heat wave! July 3 2018 News

Summer is surely here now! With two glorious and much-needed inches of rainfall last week, the plants are meeting this week’s heat wave head on and ready to grow. Vining crops like sweet potatoes and cucumbers are stretching their runners towards the aisles, the potatoes are turning into dense bushes, and the corn seems to be shooting upwards before our very eyes. The trick this week will be to keep the plants (and the crew) hydrated. We have five irrigation “zones” in the field that we will rotate the sprinklers around each evening, watering in the cool hours to maximize every drop of water we pump from our irrigation ponds. We dug the ponds a few years ago and have never regretted the investment we made in them. Though there have been seasons when we seldom needed to irrigate, without them we would be in dire straights during dry years like this one. Stay cool out there, and eat your vegetables!
Cheers
